Pottery Museum of Deruta
Deruta pottery in a museum

The Regional Pottery Museum of Deruta is the oldest Italian museum of ceramics. Its foundation dates back to 1898 and the aim was to create not only a place of conservation and culture but also an exhibition model useful to the workers.
The museum is located in the convent of San Francesco, located in the historic center of Deruta.
The fresco located at the entrance to the Museum, an ancient entrance to the convent, is of artistic importance.
At the end of the last century, after a restoration work, the architectural complex of San Francesco was destined to become a permanent museum.
The original collection initially exhibited in the municipal building, consisted of about 180 works, some reproductions of Alpinolo Magnini and ceramic fragments from local excavations. Most of the pieces were the result of donations. In the eighties and nineties of the twentieth century, there was a further increase in works thanks to the acquisition of the Leonardo Pecchioli and Milziade Magnini collections. The most recent acquisitions have made it possible to enrich the museum's collection with works from the Renaissance Deruta production.
The tour route, the result of the project curated by Giancarlo Bojani and Giulio Busti, allows admiring about six thousand five hundred works organized on four exhibition levels.
The museum collection develops along a chronological path. The various thematic sections follow the development and evolution of the ceramic tradition from the Middle Ages to the Twentieth century.
